Charter High's Home Run with Middleton

Congratulations to the Charter School for Math and Science! It has wisely chosen Juanita Middleton, a long-time Charleston educator, for its new principal. Middleton as a principal has earned high marks in the past from both parents and teachers, most notably at North Charleston High School in its recovery efforts.

A strong, experienced principal who knows the county and can consolidate CSMS's successes on the academic front while keeping its diverse student body, the best integrated in all of Charleston County, should send shivers down CCSD Superintendent McGinley's spine.

She brings with her much experience and a strong support base. She knows the in's and out's of CCSD but she also has a great deal of experience outside the closed Charleston system. She is a dose of what is needed for an independent school that wants to keep its independence and still maintain its charter under CCSD. It should be a very good year for CCSMS with more improvements ahead.

IF, and only if, the real powers-that-be (and they know who thay are) allow her to actually serve as the Principal. There is a reason she is the fifth Principal in five years. Will she be the de facto Principal as well as the de jure Principal? Time will tell. Kudos to the school for finally hiring an Assistant Principal who is qualified to hold that position.

Teacher turnover is very high. Only eight (?) of the original staff are still with the school. I am not sure what that says but somebody should be asking why?

Filling the principal's seat with a srong leader is the first step in bringing stability to staff. A good second step is providing a well qualified assistant principal to provide depth and continuity. This is a good teaching environment but it can't continue without someone to take the lead and provide a unified sense of direction. Good choice for the top two positions.

I agree with "Anonymous 5:54." If you look at the minutes of the CCSMS Board meeting in May, Park Dougherty is on record stating that former board members feel as if they are not being adequately consulted on recent school issues. Some people can never give up their influence. Good luck, Ms. Middleton. You're gonna need it.
