ACLU & Planned Parenthood No Coincidence?

Brace yourself. Friday's P & C divulged that both the ACLU and Planned Parenthood are opening offices in downtown Charleston. For the ACLU it's the only office in the state--where else but Charleston, of course. For Planned Parenthood the impetus is being "flush with cash" and seeing Charleston as under-served. Probably it saw South Carolina's "sixth-lowest abortion rate in the nation" as a disgrace, you know, rather like the way we view CCSD's graduation rates.

According to PP, "'Initially, the center will not offer abortion services.'" For how many hours?

Don't hold your breath, either, waiting to see if the ACLU will support the rights of protesters against Planned Parenthood.

Maybe these two like-minded organizations thought there would be safety in numbers. Maybe they're both being funded from the same source. Does anyone see the irony in Joe Riley's being present for the ACLU's ribbon-cutting?

Food for thought.

No need to hold your breath.

A google search on "ACLU + abortion protests" will easily find you examples of the ACLU supporting the free speech rights of abortion protesters.

Point taken. I shouldn't jump to conclusions.

If Riley was at the ribbon cutting, I suppose that would mean the ACLU would have to recuse themselves from representing anyone who has a complaint against the closing of more downtown schools and the liquidation of these properties in favor of private developers. Riley doesn't intend to let any more development opportunities like get off track by another charter school sneaking in. Even white suburbanites are beginning to sense that the new Burke was really built with another purpose in mind, one that Riley had helped broker. Will the ACLU take aim at Riley if he's found to be behind any plan to play bait and switch with the public school properties downtown? I hope the ACLU in Charleston will be just as consistant with this issue as its reputation generally has reflected.

The ACLU is primarity reactive to the complaints presented by clients, rather than proactive with an overarching agenda. So, if your civil rights have been denied, make an appointment and see if the ACLU will represent you.

I agree with anonymous 10:40 a.m.

Also, the ACLU is the American Civil Liberties Union. It is not the American Let's Be Sure We Treat Everybody Fairly Union. It is not the American Let's Fight Every Badly Conceived Government Action Union.

t has a specific mission, and I doubt that includes micromanaging whether CCSD sells off real estate.
