Finding 14 More Miscreants in CCSD Magnets

Some parents of students at the Academic Magnet and School of the Arts in the Charleston County School District actually took the district at its word when their children applied for admission. They provided the documents as requested.

Fast forward to October 2012: how silly they were to imagine that requesting the documents meant that the documents were required! Or maybe documents were required for all except the special few that received consideration from the Superintendent and her lackeys.

The fact remains that at least 30, not 14, students at the two magnet high schools do not live in the district. Those are slots denied to 30 families who play by the rules.

The district deserves to be sued by those who have been on their waiting lists.

The district is in CYA mode. If the district was really concerned about doing this right, they would be contacting those on waiting lists to fill a similar number of seats. The district isn't doing that and it isn't giving a good reason why not. Wasn't it McGinley who said that would be the fair thing to do right after this came to light. McGinley has changed her mind again.

I blame the school district and the people who handle the applications as much as I blame the parents. This is wrong and those within the school district who let this go on are just as much responsible for this screw up.

Let's not forget your story from last year about how the daughter of MUSC's med school Dean was improperly admitted to AMHS.

This student applied AFTER the application deadline and she was still admitted to AMHS. Principal Peterson insisted that was ok because there were no waiting lists and they had a vacancy. Sure they did!

The parents are both doctors and they live in a $1.8 million home on Sullivan's Island. Rules are for little people.

There are laws, regulations and policies all designed to guide us on how things are supposed to work. CCSD is consistent in that it is ready to break any rule as it suits their agenda so long as no one objects too loudly. The superintendent is all about perception. She can make this problem look like it's new this year and it only involves 2 schools or that only a few students were admitted as a result of the mistakes of others. Don't expect CCSD to show the leadership necessary to make this right.
