McGinley & CCSD Board Putting Students at Risk?

The list in Tuesday's P & C of "waves" of CCSD school construction financed by the one percent sales tax deserves a Bronx cheer.

After years of alarm concerning seismic deficiencies leading to the transfer of students from five schools and massive busing of same, Superintendent McGinley and the Charleston County School Board have decided that further exploration of seismic problems in other school buildings can be safely put off until some later date as yet unnamed. Apparently, the only Board member to object was Mary Ann Taylor. Chris Fraser, the Board Chair, has some 'splaining to do.

Either an earthquake is imminent, or it's not. Fraser and the Board can't have it both ways.

What really takes the prize was Bill Lewis saying that if they did the seismic studies earlier, they might discover the school district would have to address the risks posed to the occupants. He reasoned, "If we don't know what the risks are, we don't have to repair the schools." Besides, they didn't budget any money to fix them as part of the recent referendum. So much for the way CCSD understands "Life Safety". Tell that to the schools that got uprooted from downtown under the threat of being an emergency.

The P & C report failed to show that Cindy Coats and Elizabeth Kandrac also objected. It looks like the entire seismic scare was just to get voters to support the plan. Moving the seismic studies for the other schools to the back of the line now makes all the earthquake and structural concerns expressed by district official before the election look like a deliberate lie.
