CCSD Voters Snookered Again

When the Charleston County School Board raises your property taxes during the next six years (and it will), at least you can console yourself that you weren't stupid enough to vote for the sales tax increase!

Wait till the public finds out how much this sales tax will roll in. A lot more than CCSD estimates. Michael Bobby and Nancy McGinly low balled it for a reason and they know it. It's a slush fund. Just don't expect them to lower taxes either.

Go figure. The P&C said in today's Sunday edition that no precinct in Charleston County voted against the sales tax. What really doesn't make sense is that precincts where higher valued and property tax heavy real estate is located tended to be less supportive of the sales tax. Precincts where lower valued and property tax light real estate is located tended to give much more support to the sales tax. What doesn't make sense at all is that the biggest hit with an added sales tax will be felt by lower income voters. They tend to live in neighborhoods with lower property values and where a higher property tax would be minimal. Either a lot of people aren't understanding what's going on or CCSD has really done a number on the poor in this county. What can we expect with the mediocre education CCSD has given us and particularly to the lower income voters and their families?

After all, it was just a penny, right?

I paid a dollar for a pretzel at Northwoods today. The tax was an additional 10 cents. When the school tax begins it will move up to 11 cents. Of course it's just a penny more, but what started out as a dollar pretzel, and then suddenly became $1.11, is starting to look a lot less inviting.
