Is it true? Is the Policy Committee of the Charleston County School Board about to pull a fast one on the Academic Magnet (AMHS)?
It's a well-known phenomenon that when something is working really well politicians want to tinker with it. Scuttlebutt has it that Gregg Meyers, knowing how well using his law office address worked to get his own children into Buist Academy on the District 20 list, now wants to create a similar structure for entrance to the Academic Magnet.
This marvelous system, virtually guaranteed to be finagled in like fashion to Buist entrance in days of yore, would use zip codes instead of four lists as Buist does. It would also use a lottery.
After all, why would we want only the best students to go to AMHS? Some of them should linger in other high schools to beef up their stats for Superintendent McGinley. Just think of the possibilities.
Meanwhile, Meyers has scheduled the next meeting of the Policy Committee for the last day of Rosh Hashanah, guaranteeing that any observant Jews will not interfere with discussion and offering to take the minutes himself while chairing the meeting, since the committee's secretary will not be there.
Love it.

Even as he prepares to leave the board in November he can't leave it alone. It's his baby. You can take this to the bank. Everything that is wrong with this system Gregg Meyers has had a hand in it. It's hard to believe he originally argued against this kind of discrimination. That was before he lost the case in the 1980's and before he took a seat on the school board in the early 1990's. He's spent most of his time since then supporting discrimination and defending a 2nd rate public school system for all but a few. There has to be four candidates for the four open seats who see the potential for change.
Just curious what the Buist list is like now that the school has moved to Mt. P. Do they still have District 20 list? Wouldn't seem right if that's still in play. Maybe this is good time to overhaul the whole admissions policy. Just a thought.
FYI, hearing rumours from some Buist parents that the real reason Buist was moved is to get the school out of downtown and that Riley wants the land for some other city purpose... just repeating a rumour floating around.
The Policy Committee meets today, Friday, Sept. 10 at 3:30, at 75 Calhoun St. Though the meeting is supposed to be open to the public, it will be behind closed and locked doors. The agenda was only released this morning...less than the legally required 24 hours. The public can get in, but they will need to ask. It's not exactly user friendly.
Check out the agenda. It's a whopper. It includes a policy change to allow a non-resident to attend a Charleston County magnet school. The administration looks like it is trying to cover its rear end, though not very well. They administration is uncomfortably aware they are being watched more closely. I wonder what an audit would say about all the past meetings that were not so well documented.
Do you think Elizabeth Kandrac is putting them on notice to clean up their act? Hey, Brian Hicks, that's why we should pay to have trained school board members.
