In the ongoing saga of the building-less Sea Islands YouthBuild Charter School, as of January 24th, the following information appeared in the P & C:
Charter officials are negotiating almost daily on a multi-year lease, and they hope that will be finished by the end of next week [Note: that would be by February 1st]. Two state agencies also must sign off on the building, and that hasn't happened yet. Chewning [the director] hopes students will be able to move into the new site by the third week in February.For those of you who might have forgotten, CCSD closed Murray Hill Academy to older students, while agreeing to expand YouthBuild into a charter school to accommodate them. YouthBuild's director promised a suitable facility without having one, and CCSD Board members didn't verify that it did.
These shenanigans have resulted in the following headlines:
- August 22, 2007: "Students Start from Scratch" (spin about its lack of equipment);
- September 8: "Charter School in Jeopardy";
- September 12: "YouthBuild Charter Officials Perplexed by Board Directive"(can't understand why charter would be yanked if it doesn't have a building);

- October 16--"Panel: Give Charter School 90 Days";
- October 23--"Charter School Given 60-Day Reprieve";

- November 24--" Charter School Requests Services";

- January 24, 2008--"Charter School Has Temporary Site for Classes"(after spending two weeks at a Boy Scout facility on Wadmalaw Island).
Finally, how much money has been given to the school so far, and is it accounted for?

Yep, this week McGinley announced at a faculty meeting that all Teacher Coaches will be fired at the end of this school year and several schools will be closed due to her budget crunch. Is this lady stupid or what? Eliminate some of that top heavy management and you will find some money. This isn't fixing schools, this is destroying them.
Why can't YouthBuild be allowed to occupy the vacant Murray Hill campus? Shouldn't these charter schools be required to meet minimum operating standards in order to receive this kind of assistance? How can a charter school function efficiently with so few students? It looks like CCSD wants some of these charter schools to fail, slowly and painfully in some cases, just to prove the point that not all charter schools work. With the support like what CCSD provides, no wonder some charter schools aren't working out.
