Charter High School: Good News

The following information was sent out by the Charter High School committee on January 10th. Attend if you can to see how a lottery can be done transparently!
As of today, the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science (CCSMS)
has received more applications than the seats available in every
grade: 6, 7, 8 and 9. Currently, the total is 289 applications for
180 seats as follows: 123 for 40 seats in grade 6, 46 for 40 seats in
grade 7, 38 for 20 seats in grade 8 and 82 for 80 seats in grade 9.

At 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, in the auditorium of the Main
Library, there will be a public lottery to determine which applicants
will be invited to attend Charleston's newest public school.

Applications are still being accepted and will be placed on the waiting
list. Based on the numbers cited above, more applications to grades 7
and 9 are highly encouraged, because the waiting list in those grades
will be very short.

That is great news! Who is the principal of CCMS?

I've heard that the principal is Jon Boutzon. Anybody know anything about him?

To the 12:45 poster, I bet Jon Butzon will be on the Neighborhood Planning Team even though he doesn't even live in Charleston County! He works for Joe and Joe runs everything

Despite his early support for school choice, Jon Butzon has opposed the CCSM&S (see his P&C Op-Ed last fall in support of Rev. Joe Darby's racist ranting)...for whatever hypocritical reason that has to do with political pandering.

No, it's very unlikely he's in the running for principal of CCSM&S. The charter school committee is said to be in negotiations with some very highly qualified candidates...so don't expect an answer until they have an agreement. The charter school is trying to act professionally and respect everyone involved.

Like their lottery and the application process leading up to it, this charter school has been very professional, fair and above board about everything they have done. So far, so good. When they have their leadership team in place, they will probably make an announcement.

Looks like Jon Butzon will have to keep his job at CEN after all.

Buist should be watching this lottery closely. How civilized to accept applications after the deadline. How logical to just simply take late applications in the order they are received, adding them to the existing lottery generated waiting lists on a first-come-first-served basis. No problem. Why is it that the people who run Buist Academy for Advanced Learning haven't figured out how to do this yet?

I've heard that Sallie Ballard is no longer in charge of the admissions process at Buist. The new person in charge has also sent out letters to the thousands of people who are said to still be on the waiting lists in order to find out who really is still interested. I'd like to know just how many people will be on the Buist waiting lists after this is done.

Who is in charge of admissions at Buist now? Gregg Meyers? Maybe it's Butzon (Riley.) Those that are really in control won't give it up.

Monday's Post & Courier published the wrong location of Tuesday's
lottery for the first year's students at the Charleston Charter School for Math & Science (CCSMS.) The lottery will occur in the auditorium of the Main Library (68 Calhoun Street.)

The proceedings will commence at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 15.

292 applications will be included in the lottery as follows: 124 for
the 40 seats in grade six, 47 for the 40 seats in grade seven, 38
for the 20 seats in grade eight and 83 for the 80 seats in grade
nine.

Dr. Doug Gepford is now in charge of the admissions process at Buist. He's the associate superintendent now in charge of most of the elementary schools on the peninsula, including Buist. I would also like to know how many names on the Buist waiting lists are really still waiting. Two thousand sounds like a very unrealistic number since that would mean 5% of CCSD's total enrollment is waiting to get into one school out of the 80 schools it runs. Not likely. A call to Dr. Gepford's office at 762-2780 should get answers to the many questions that Mrs. Ballard couldn't or wouldn't answer.

What a wonderful experience to witness a truly transparent lottery today by the CSMS-
Congratulations!
Now if only CCSD and Doug Gepford would take the Buist lottery out of the hands of Janet and Sallie.
