Anyone who has followed the District 20 board's attempt for District 20 residents to receive priority to Buist is fully aware of what a joke this is. You may want to take the day off work for this one. It's entertainment, to say the least.

It'll be interesting to see who on the CCSD Board presides at this new administrative judicial hearing. Why do you think they chose 10:00 in the morning to hold it? How many parents involved in the original hearing can take off from work for this new edition of the Gregg Meyers talk show? This was the same June 2006 hearing where Sallie Ballard and Janet Rose were on the witness stand for over two hours defending the way they've mishandled Buist admissions. Their defence? "It's different; it can't be compared to 'other' schools anywhere else." Oh! Pray tell, why?

Maybe they'll have to start the hearing all over again since Simons and Fishburne can't be on the hearing panel anymore. Honestly, who on the county school board is objective enough? The issue is simple. Should Buist be required to handled its admissions priorities the same way other comparable elementary magnet schools are handled? All other magnet schools like St. Andrews Math & Science use a standard county model. Only Buist doesn't.

Keep in mind this is Sallie's appeal of a decision the Dist. 20 Board made in 2005. The downtown board voted 7-0 to give priority to qualified Dist. 20 applicants first, siblings second and all remaining seats would be subject to a lottery. If the county school board overturns the decision they are saying there will be no change in Dist. 20 or Buist.

Sallie Ballard and Gregg Meyers claim that if the Dist. 20 first admissions policy was applied "Buist's current standards of excellence would suffer."

If CCSD’s and the Superintendent at the time had not blocked Dist. 20's proposed change, this is what would have happened. Of the 40 seats in Buist's kindergarten in Aug. 2006, less than 15 positions would have been filled by real Dist. 20 residents, less than 7 would have been filled by siblings. That would leave at least 18 seats to be filled by one lottery (instead of 4) for the remaining county-wide applicants. (In theory only 10 county-wide seats are available now.) Academic qualifications would have remained the same…with no damage at all.

The only thing that would have "suffered" would have been Janet Rose's Byzantine system of 4 overlapping lotteries with 2,000 plus applicants left waiting…never to be seen again. This corruptible process would have been eliminated and public trust might have been restored at Buist. You see, the only thing that would have "suffered" would have been Sallie Ballard’s ability to manipulate the admissions process.

As a downtown resident I am offended by the Meyers/Ballard statements about the abilities of downtown children. Is this racism? One must assume that Gregg Meyers and Sallie Ballard are white. Who is Janet Rose? Do any of these people in power have children and do their children go to Buist?

That's the problem. They don't want anybody at Buist that they don't know. Not only do they want Buist to be closed to academically qualified kids they don't know, they justify it by saying those kids "need" to stay in the failing schools they are assigned to attend in order to help those schools raise their report cards. Like keeping a talented downtown kid out of Buist is supposed to "help" improve Burke. What about helping the kid, Sallie?

Where's Rev. Darby when we actually need him?

For those of you that are watching the saga of the Charter school unfold.... Gregg has officially duped you like he has done countless others. He meets with Park promising full support... then tells the paper he fully supports no rent. Then in the board meeting, he totally agrees with Paylor and does his usual flip flop. I have been telling you folks you can't trust him. He is just in this for the press. He doesn't care about you and has proven it with his lies

So is CCSD NOW going to address the false addresses from last year? I'm so confused as to what is going on...but I guess that's their strategy.

Get Sallie Ballard out! That's the first strategy to improvement. She is a total looney tune. Don't you think?

I completely agree. Not only is she "looney" - she's seems to "stretch the truth" -
I'm being careful just in case "Mr. Attorney I love Sallie and will do anything she wants Brandenburg" is on here.

So what happened? I saw the tv news but what really happened? Can we get a transcript? I heard that Marvin Stewart was incredible. Good for him for always standing up for the children of this city.

The whole hearing was a farce to cover CCSD, the board and the superintendent's office for years of using the Buist admissions scam to benefit themselves and friends. How Toya Green could have served as a judge in this administrative hearing and still claim to be objective I can't figure out...of course she may have had the same legal education as Gregg Meyers. She's an Uncle Tom and her husband is Aunt Jemima. Her kid has a ticket so she doesn't mind selling out the rest of downtown's black community.
