Correction to March 10 Post: Next Year's the Second

From the P&C's Letters to the Editor:

Goose Creek

Request granted

On his recent trip to Cuba, the pope requested that the Communist government declare Good Friday a national holiday. His wish was granted.

Meanwhile, back here in the Holy City, for the first time in the more than 25 years I’ve worked in Charleston County schools, it is a regular work/school day. Too bad the pope didn’t come here!

Toleration of religious holidays isn't capitulation. Sometimes it's just practical to be accomodating. If the Cuban dictator gets it, then what does that say about our school administrators when they don't? Accomodation doesn't have to be seen as an endorsement, that is if the leadership is comfortable in their own skin.

From the administration’s point of view, this issue was never really about conveniently meshing next year’s school calendar with major religious holidays. This was simply push back from the superintendent. She doesn't take views different from her own very well. It matters not that setting the calendar is a relatively trivial matter. When alternatives are presented by people she doesn’t care to give the time of day, she turns a deaf ear. Forget being reasonable or finding middle ground. With this superintendent, it's all about winning and losing. She doesn't lose and there is no middle ground. Plan B was her objective all along and the rubber stamps on the board obliged.
