CCSD Citizens' Oversight Committee Letter

Just to make taxpayers confident that their dollars are well spent in CCSD's new capital building campaign, the district is soliciting members for a Citizens' Oversight Committee. Each community liaison should self-nominate by letter sent to 75 Calhoun (see Tuesday's P&C for details). Here's my suggested content for successfully being selected.

Dear Superintendent McGinley and CCSD Board Chair Chris Fraser,

I would so desire to serve on the Citizens' Oversight Committee. I know that my quarterly attendance to listen to presentations by the Superintendent and Bill Lewis will enlighten my entire community. Superintendent McGinley's words are always so wise, and Bill Lewis is such a commanding figure in our community.

I have no opinions of my own on the building campaign or its finances, so I have no conflict of interest in promulgating these inspiring messages to my community. In fact, since I don't understand finances at all and can barely balance my checkbook, for all I care, you can leave out that boring numbers stuff in your quarterly presentations.

I'm sure our committee will spearhead a new understanding and transparency between CCSD and the community.

Warmest regards,
Joe Toady

Here's a novel thought, Babbie. Put your money where your writing is...

Nominate yourself. Become a part of the solution of greater transparency.

I would be interesting to see the nominations they don't pick...then compare them to the ones they do. I'm willing to bet the oversight committee members chosen will be closer to the description of Babbie's mock nominee.

I'd imagine that the nominations they don't pick won't be available by name. Or I would hope they wouldn't be.

But the diamond question is, who'll oversee those who are overseeing?

For a state that seemed to be screaming that they wanted greater transparancy throughout government, they elected folks who talk a good game, then walk from it (from governor, to school board members, to re-elected state senators, etc...)

Babbie,

Not a big fan of this site, but the atrocities thrown at the students of Stall and North Charleston today stretch any sense of decency and logic.....the folks in NC need t be heard!!!!!!

Watch the smoke and mirrors, Winbush is after McGinley's job.....word is he is telling too many.

The chamber of commerce get to pick a quarter of the oversight committee. After they bought the referendum, now they get to steer the development of schools right into their members' pockets.

Bill Lewis extended the Construction Management contract without board approval. Lewis and his CCSD team picked the architects. Lewis has already picked the final school designs for more than $100 million worth of downtown schools. Lewis has decided which school gets what type of academic programs and for what grades. He chooses the time lines and the contractors. The order of priorities is all but set in stone. Lewis tells the board, “This is it. Take it or leave it.”
So tell us, what exactly is a Citizens' Oversight Committee supposed to oversee?

I like what Mcginley said about Stall and North Charleston high schools. She basically says we've already tried everything, so now we are going to have to try something else. She could be a comedian if this wasn't already so serious a failure on her part.

On channel 5 at 5, NJM is asked how is moving the same number of students around between the 2 high school campuses going to save any money. Her answer: "We really aren't focused on that right now."

Tell that to the line workers she's proposing to send RIF notices to in a couple of months. Then tell them she's taking a 6% cut in her pay which is after the 10% raise she gave herself last year. No, they really aren't focused on that right now. She doesn't want anyone else to be either.
