Whenever a business, organization, or individual doesn't want much attention paid to important information that must be disclosed, it uses the Friday Night Document Dump. Even better is the Friday Night Document Dump before a major holiday weekend.
So it happens that members of the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees received important documents relating to the pending budget last Friday night. Anyone might wonder what is in those documents that Superintendent McGinley and Chief Financial Officer Bobby would prefer not to discuss.
Strangely enough, the ploy failed. The Board instead took the budget as an information item, refusing to hurry through a vote of approval without reading everything that was in it. Unlike the U.S. Congress.

Here's your chance. A public hearing on the final budget is next Wednesday at 75 Calhoun. Michael Bobby will also be answering board questions in public before the hearing. Hopefully the board won't be tossing soft balls. Let 'em know what you think.
Send your questions, suggestions or gripes to your favorite board members. Most of them don't appear too happy with this budget either. A little public pressure will go a long way with this one. Who knows, they might even manage to change the direction of this freight train.
Based on what board members said on Tuesday night when they discussed it, the superintendent's budget looks like it is full of special interest spending that will never see a classroom. Board members seem to be in a cutting mood unless a program can be proven to make a difference.
It might help if you post the list of board member e-mail addresses and phone numbers again. Like the P&C said, they were elected to serve the people. Tell 'em what you think.
