Pep Rally Silliness for CCSD Testing

The Innovation Zone Learning Committee of the Charleston County School District (or IZLCCCSD, as it is fondly called) seems to have run out of effective ideas. Today another pep rally, organized by CCSD Associate Superintendent James Winbush, was held in North Charleston to encourage students' excitement over PASS testing.

The excitement will need to last until March 20.

Winbush suggests that excitement has caused scores to rise in the past. Huh? I'd like to see solid evidence for that.

Meanwhile, since students from 14 schools attended the event, how much was the cost of bussing them in? How much instructional time was lost from the classroom?

Oh, I forgot. Excitement will trump knowledge every time.

Isn't this what entrenched dictators do? Hold rallies with bussed-in crowds who don't have much choice.

Teachers are starting to complain that Winbush is pretty much giving them an ultimatum about the extended school year. Either get behind it or expect to be transferred to another school, say Edisto Island or McClellanville, or possibly transferred "out the door". Funny thing about all of this, the school board hasn't approved it, much less funded the superintendent's latest harebrained plan. Or does she expect her rubber stamp board to just go along with it regardless of the cost?

Pep Rally for PASS testing? You have got to be kidding! I have opted my children out of PASS testing this year in CCSD. We will not participate in these types of high-stakes testing, and we certainly wouldn't participate in a pep rally for it!
When are parents and teachers going to speak out against these types of misguided policies? Join us for a lecture at Seacoast - Mt. Pleasant on Monday, March 12th at 7pm. Guest speaker, Ceresta Smith, will discuss the harmful effects of high-stakes testing and teacher merit pay.
