Wow, isn't it well thought-out? [See Peninsula Parents Skeptical of Move in Thursday's P&C.]
Buist parents can rest easy in their strong organizational support, knowing full well that the magnet school, if moved off the peninsula, will get what it wants. Parents at neighborhood schools such as James Simons aren't so sure--and why should they be? As one parent said,
"she came to find out why the district seemed to be pushing to relocate students as soon as possible without a plan for when they could return. She left with the same question. She said no one explained why, after decades of use by students, the buildings were now being declared unsafe, and she believes the district intends to close more downtown schools. 'I'm all for safety,' she said. 'The whole thing is, why all of a sudden is it such a rush?'"Isn't that what we're all asking?
Meanwhile, the state legislature is planning to cut even more funds from school districts, cuts that may affect funds for busing. And McGinley's plans will demand more busing.

Once McGinley had that report in hand she cannot, not do something. She has safe buildings to put these kids in...you are just trying to stir up trouble, as usual.
How can you fault Buist parents for being proactive and organized? They saw how it helped Charleston Progressive to come in looking unified and having a plan. That is just a smart way to handle a problem, not with hysterics. The people who got organized put in the time and the effort, they are just regular parents, what is your beef. Any other school could do the same thing. There are lots of smart parents at those schools too or are you saying there are not????
Babbie just hates Buist, from her ivory tower, if she really wants to impress us with her concern for downtown, underprivileged kids, she would go get a job at Memminger or Sanders Clyde.
I don't know why the first poster is so touchy. I think Buist parents are behaving exactly as they should. They know how to get things done.
The first poster said, "Once McGinley had that report in hand she cannot, not do something." The poster misleads us on the order of the facts.
McGinley didn't have any reports "in hand" until AFTER she announced her intention to close these schools and move the students out. She effectively condemned these buildings without having any reason other than her own. At least half CCSD buildings would fail similar standards if put to the same analysis. Only McGinley is motivated by a desire to shut down the very schools she has consistently failed.
Bill Lewis, on the other hand, is motivated by greed and his ability to profit from a school building management system rampant with graft.
Like an incompetent doctor, McGinley has a history of burying her mistakes.
Buist is not a failing school, what is her motivation there. Please comment... your conspiracy theories...are very entertaining.
Neither Buist nor Sullivan's Island are failing schools, if you judge them by their school report cards. In both cases, McGinley is responding to powerful and well organized school communities. She has also given these two schools much more information about their future. She has done nothing for the other schools downtown. With Buist and SI on her list for "emergency" closures this summer, she can side step any claims that she is singling out minority schools for disruption. It's her lack of reassurances to the minority school communities that gives her agenda away. If she was committed to the success of these schools, she would have given CPA, James Simons and Memminger parents the same assurances for returning to a newer, bigger and better school on the same site within 3 years as she gave Buist and SI. She can't make those promises to the downtown schools and, even if she did, she has no intention of keeping those promises. It's all a ruse to close downtown neighborhood schools and pack them into bigger schools without substantially changing or improving the educational program. It’s just bait and switch. The threat to life and limb that comes with a poor education is a far greater risk to this community. She should give James Simons, Memminger and Charleston Progressive the same assurances, guarantees and resources during the disruption that McGinley is giving Buist and Sullivan’s Island. That’s not likely to happen.
What's up with the new applicants this year?
